Sponsoring New Cartoon Shows

General Mills famously sponsored the Jay Ward cartoons of the 1960s and it was a perfect match.

Having animated cereal commercials in between the cartoons just made the whole experience more fun.

When I was a kid, I totally identified certain cereals with specific cartoons.

Identifying the cereals with the cartoons makes kids love the sponsor all the more.

We could bring this concept back either with a new cartoon block on TV, or an online website that runs new cartoons, bookended with General Mills commercials. We can even have certain shows with GM in the title, like "General Mills presents...The Heartaches!"

  1. Enjoyed the interview. I share the same feeling about the commercials being more involved with the show and entertaining, and not just because I grew up with that model. Your theory about commercials people wouldn't just FF through is dead on, but of course the funkillers have made sure that doesn't happen anymore.

I know I'd heard about that FCC regulation before, but I had forgotten about over the years. I'm sure it's to do with impressionable children and considered a dirty marketing trick akin the the famous Soupy Sales "scandal" when he told kids to go get money from their parents and send it in. Or that incident was a direct catalyst. Either way, more fun killed off.
